Roma and Bayern Leverkusen left their key to the Europa League semifinal series open. José Mourinho’s team won just enough, but without letting Xabi Alonso’s team take Italy, at least, evenly.
The goal came when it seemed that the game would have no owner. With few situations to highlight, the two teams seemed to save everything for next week, when they define in Germany who will be in the final.
But Mourinho did not save anything. Not even Paulo Dybala, who with an ailment watched a large part of the game from the bench, but ended up entering to play the last minutes, when Roma prevailed on the scoreboard.
The one who played the entire game was Exequiel Palacios, with a sober role and pushing a few meters ahead of what he usually does. His team had a neatness to move the ball and occupy the spaces, diametrically opposed to the difficulty that he presented to kick the goal.
The goal came after a quarter of an hour into the second half. It was a long ball that, with his back to the goal, came down with Tammy Abraham’s chest. The Englishman dominated the ball and whipped off a whip that found opposition from the goalkeeper who rebounded. And there was Edoardo Bove to finish off next to the post.
Until then, the clearest had been in the first half, from set pieces.
