MOSCOW — The Russian Interior Ministry on Monday issued an arrest warrant for US Senator Lindsey Graham over his comments about the fighting in Ukraine.
In an edited video of his Friday meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy released by Zelenskyy’s office, Graham, a South Carolina Republican, noted that “the Russians are dying” and described U.S. military aid to the country as “the best money we’ve ever spent.”
While Graham appeared to have made the comments in different parts of the conversation, the short video from Ukraine’s presidential office juxtaposed them, sparking outrage in Russia.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded on Sunday by saying that “it is difficult to imagine a greater disgrace to the country than to have such senators.”
The Commission of Inquiry, the country’s main investigative agency, has opened a criminal investigation against Graham and the Home Office has issued an arrest warrant against him, according to Monday’s official register of wanted criminal suspects.
