Protesters have thrown snowballs at riot police during clashes in Russia after a rights activist was sentenced to four years in prison.
Dozens of people were arrested and injured, with one protester suffering a “shattered head”, says monitoring group OVD-Info.
A crowd gathered outside a courtroom in Bashkortostan to support local activist Fail Alsynov, with officers firing tear gas into the crowd.
Some reports say several thousand people are attending the protest, which has been going on for several days in sub-zero temperatures of around -20 degrees Celsius.
Alsynov was jailed for incitement to ethnic hatred, which he denies.
