The athletes’ commission of the Russian Olympic Committee lifted the conditions set by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the return of Russians and Belarusians to international competitions.

The exclusion of these athletes was decided in 2022, after Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine.

Despite authorizing the return of some athletes with Russian and Belarusian passports, the move that sparked controversy was the ban on athletes linked to the armed and security forces, such as CSKA Moscow, which had won 45 of Russia’s 71 medals at the Tokyo at the 2020 Olympics.

The removal of national symbols and the prohibition of competitions by the teams was also criticized by the Russian committee, which classified this situation as “humiliating”.

The Russian commission said this Friday, in an official statement, that it believes that access for athletes should be based on “equality with the rest of the participants in the Olympic movement.”

Russian athletes will not accept any “conditions, orders, restrictions or additional criteria”, as is the case with this neutrality statute imposed by the IOC, as they consider it discriminatory.

“In our view, a dangerous precedent is being created, no athlete in the world can be sure that civil rights will be respected in the future,” the Russian athletes added.
