SEOUL — North Korean leader Kim Jong-un may be suffering from a sleep disorder and a potentially worsening alcohol and nicotine dependence, the South Korean intelligence agency said Wednesday.

The National Intelligence Agency (NIS) told South Korean lawmakers that the North Koreans were “intensively” collecting overseas medical information for top officials with insomnia, including details of drugs used to treat it, such as Zolpidem,

Mr. Yoo Sang-bum, a legislator for South Korea’s ruling People Power Party and executive secretary of the parliamentary intelligence committee, later shared details of the NIS briefing with reporters.

He said North Korea recently imported a large amount of Marlboro and Dunhill cigarettes, as well as high-end snacks traditionally served with alcohol, Yoo said.

South Korea’s spy agency told lawmakers that Mr Kim, who now weighs about 140 kg, likely observed a failed satellite launch on Wednesday morning.

The incident led to a false emergency alert from the Seoul government that caused panic. the launch, and that the satellite is only capable of rudimentary reconnaissance missions. BLOOMBERG
