Sandra Torres, presidential candidate of the National Unity of Hope (UNE), spoke this Monday June 26 on social networks to thank the electorate for their support at the polls; She also gave an interview to a local media.
On her Twitter account, Torres thanked her supporters for making her win the first round of elections. The second round will be contested by the candidate of the Seed Movement, Bernardo Arévalo de León.
“We are in the second round! We will work tirelessly for you, because I have complied and will continue to comply as the first woman president, ”Torres wrote in the message that was accompanied by a photograph of her and her vice-presidential officer, Romeo Estuardo Guerra Lemus.
“We won the first round. Thank you, Guatemala! We are one step away from true Change,” says the image shared by the candidate.
Hours later, he also published a video in which he also thanked the support received at the polls.
“Today the country’s democracy has won, Guatemala has won, we will continue to carry out a clean, honest, positive campaign and proposals. I want to open a window of hope for Guatemala, a country where we all fit, a Guatemala without hatred or revenge, a country without ideology in which love and respect for others prevail, thank you Guatemalans, I owe this victory to you,” Torres said in the video.
He added that “the first objective has already been achieved, only the last effort is missing, we only need the last effort, I assure you that hope will soon return to our country.”
In addition, in the televised interview, Torres thanked the bases of the party for their support and said that on August 20 she will become the first female president of Guatemala.

He added that Arévalo capitalized on the votes of Codeca (Campesino Development Committee) and the MLP (Movement for the Liberation of the People, which was not registered by the TSE). “They do not have a party structure, but we will look at each other in the second round,” he added.
“They (the Seed Movement) are an ultra-left movement, they represent Codeca, that radical movement, we support the family (…) we are quite different from them,” Torres said during the interview.

They go to the second round
The candidates Sandra Torres and Bernardo Arévalo will compete for the Presidency of Guatemala in a ballot on August 20, after a surprise result in the first electoral round last Sunday.
Torres finished first with 15.78% of the votes, as the polls predicted, but Deputy Arévalo gave the big surprise by finishing second with 11.8%, although he was never among the favorites except in eighth place in the polls.

In third place in the presidential election was the right-wing official candidate Manuel Conde with 7.84%, in fourth the right-wing businessman Armando Castillo with 7.37% and in fifth the centrist Edmond Mulet with 6.78%, according to the TSE.
The right-wing Zury Ríos, daughter of former dictator Efraín Ríos Montt, was in sixth place, with 6.68%. She and Mulet trailed Torres in previous polls.
