Most people wonder why some women, even after having a first child, are unable to conceive a second time. But it is true that after having the first child, some women have difficulty conceiving the second time. There could be many reasons behind it. In this article we are going to talk about secondary infertility.
Usually, women become first-time mothers, but few find it difficult to conceive the second time. This condition is known as secondary infertility. Secondary infertility refers to a condition in which a woman is unable to conceive or complete the full term of pregnancy in the second time. Means, if a woman is again unable to conceive after one or more years of unprotected intercourse or in some cases, women may become pregnant but unable to complete the full 9 month pregnancy cycle and have a miscarriage, both situations are known as secondary infertility. Infertility can be classified into two types.
• Primary infertility
• Secondary infertility
Primary infertility can be defined as a situation where a woman is unable to conceive even after regular unprotected intercourse. While secondary infertility indicates how difficult it is for a woman to conceive for the second time. Both primary and secondary infertility have the same causes. Below are some essential causes of infertility, which are often related to secondary infertility.
1. Ovulation disorder is one of the most essential causes of infertility that many women struggle with. In that case, the eggs do not hatch from the ovaries and it becomes difficult for couples to become a parent for the second time. It is also called ovulation failure.
2. Restriction of eggs in women is congenital and cannot make new eggs after the first time. According to a study, the amount of egg cells remains very low in the ovary after 40 years and this amount has a high risk of chromosomal problems and without a good quality egg cell it is difficult to conceive.
3. Tube blockage is a major cause of infertility in women. The Fallopian tube plays a vital role in fertilization as it transfers the egg from the ovary to the uterus. In this there is a fertilization of eggs and sperm but the fertilization procedure is stopped by the blockage of the tubes.
4. Secondary infertility can be caused by endometriosis and occurs when the presence of cells is found outside the uterus. Endometrial tissue develops outside the uterus, hindering pregnancy and also affecting the pelvic organs.
5. Age is important in fertility. It is said that it is just a number and can only be counted, but here’s the thing. A woman’s fertility is high in the age of 20, but begins to decline along with the quality and quantity of eggs after the age of 35.
6. Pregnancy problems can be cesarean section and D&C process.
7. It may be difficult to become a mother for the second time due to other reasons such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, breastfeeding, obesity, autoimmune disease, uterine fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease, abnormal shape of the uterus, polyps and infection. These can also affect a woman’s fertility.
In my opinion, if couples are unable to conceive even after trying unprotected sex for 8-12 months, they can seek out a fertility specialist. Once the specialist knows about the fertility problem of both partners, he may ask you to take certain tests such as ovulation test, blood test, fallopian tube x-ray, pelvic examinations, transvaginal ultrasound, etc. to view the uterus and cervix to check the hormonal level and if the result comes from tests, the specialist can then suggest the best possible treatment for getting older for the second time.
