Former President Donald Trump arrived in Florida ahead of an appearance in federal court in Miami on Tuesday as part of a lawsuit over the unauthorized possession of secret government documents.
Trump faces 37 charges, including possession of classified defense documents, conspiracy, obstruction of justice and making false statements. This is the first time in the history of the country that federal charges have been brought against a former president.
A Miami court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. local time. This will be the second time since April that Trump has faced criminal charges. But unlike the New York case, legal experts have called the indictment by federal prosecutors a stronger case. The charges include, among other things, violations of the Espionage Act, which makes it a criminal offense to have unauthorized possession of defense-related documents. If convicted, Trump faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
The former president says he is innocent and has vowed to continue his campaign to be re-elected to the White House in 2024.
Trump, who turns 77 on Wednesday, left his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, accompanied by a motorcade as supporters gathered for a midday rally at another golf club he owns in We are drunk.
“I hope the whole country is seeing what the radical left is doing to America,” Trump wrote on his social media platform “Truth Social,” before his plane, named Trump, took off for Florida.
The legal troubles have not hurt Trump’s popularity among Republican voters. Opinion polls show him well ahead of his rivals, who are vying for the party’s official nomination. So far, all the candidates have largely sided with him on the issue.
Trump’s court appearance is being preceded by escalating rhetoric online, including defiant statements from the former president and his political allies. This has caused law enforcement officials to be on alert for potential security-related problems. Authorities said they are also monitoring plans for pro-Trump rallies in Miami.
Akpadia has returned the spotlight to federal judge Aileen Cannon, whose name became public knowledge last summer when she oversaw court proceedings related to the FBI’s warrant search of Trump’s Mar-a residence. -Lago in Florida, to get the secret documents. Ms. Cannon, appointed by Trump in 2020, will also be the judge in the case related to the classified documents.
Ms. Cannon is remembered for her controversial decision to appoint a special expert to examine how evidence was gathered during the FBI investigation, a decision that was eventually overturned by an appeals court, with conservative justices were quite critical of Ms. Cannon’s handling of the case.
