PETALING JAYA – An online gambling call center targeting foreign customers has been arrested in raids in the Klang Valley.
Forty suspects, including 21 Chinese nationals and a Singaporean man, were arrested in the May 19 raids. They were between 28 and 58 years old.
The raids were led by Bukit Aman through the Commercial Crime Investigation Department and were conducted in conjunction with the National Financial Crime Centre.
“The syndicate appeared to have prepared an online gambling platform aimed at the Taiwanese market. Interested customers were instructed to transfer funds to a mule account that we believe is located in China.
“After the money is transferred, the customers will get points for the gambling platform,” Deputy Police Chief Norsiah Mohd Saaduddin said in a statement Monday.
Investigations also revealed that the group had performed a digital currency exchange by receiving money from China and converting it into the USDT crypto token. It would then be shipped back to China.
“The source of the money received by the syndicate is still under investigation,” she said.
The seizure included 88 mobile phones, three cars and several computers.
A total of RM29,587 (S$8,700) and USD5,000 (S$6,700) were also seized.
All suspects are locked up until Thursday. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
