A knife-wielding man was killed by police in South Carolina during a Memorial Day standoff after his alleged girlfriend was found stabbed to death in a wheelchair.
Landrum police arrived at the Bon Aire apartments at about 4 a.m. Monday to find a woman dead in a wheelchair just outside an apartment. reported FOX Carolina.
The woman was later identified as 53-year-old Shana McClain by the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office. An initial examination reportedly showed she suffered multiple “sharp injuries”.
Edwards and McClain were in a relationship, according to a statement his family gave to News 2.

Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright told FOX Carolina that his deputies were called for additional help after the suspect, Freddie Edwards, 58, held a large butcher knife and refused to comply with officers’ demands to drop it.
Officers tried to detain Edwards using a Taser and a K-9 unit, Wright said, but he was unable to be subdued. Edwards then reportedly charged law enforcement before two Spartanburg County deputies and a Landrum police officer shot him. He was pronounced dead at 4:39 am
“We tried to put a taser on him, it didn’t work, we tried to put a dog on it, and it didn’t work. He started attacking the officers and then two of my deputies and a police officer from Landrum fired,” Wright told News 2.

The sheriff told the outlet that law enforcement officers tried to de-escalate the situation before shooting Edwards.
“I know after he got tased he still fought through that. I’m not sure if both probes hit him or not, we don’t know yet,” he said. “The dog should have slowed him down at least a little in a normal situation.”

Edwards’ family told News 2 that although he and McClain lived together and didn’t have a good relationship, they were still surprised to learn about Monday’s incident.
