At least three counties are bracing for a low-pressure system that will bring wet, heavy snow.

On Thursday, Environment Canada issued weather warnings for southern parts of Saskatchewan, Manitoba and northwestern Ontario due to a storm system from the US.

The same system is responsible for tornadoes in the central states that killed two people. As the storm moves north, it mixes with cool air, resulting in a blanket of snow with heavy accumulation for Canada.

“Because temperatures are so close to zero in all three regions, we’re going to see snow falling like that heavy sleet,” CTV’s Your Morning chief meteorologist Kelsey McEwen said Thursday.

On Thursday and Friday, snow is expected to intensify in Saskatchewan, dropping 5 inches on Regina, Old Post, Wood Mountain and Killdeer. The province has a snowfall warning of Environment Canada.

As the storm system moves east, parts of Manitoba could see up to 6 to 10 inches of snowreads Environment Canada’s winter storm warning.

The communities of Winnipeg, Killarney, Morden and Swan River expect “the slowly progressing disturbance” to bring snow Thursday through Friday.

A number of Schools across the province closed on Thursday anticipating the winter weather.

“It just gets worse as the day goes on,” said McEwen.

Northwestern Ontario expects snow totals of 6 to 10 inches from the system moving through Thursday afternoon and Friday night.

Kenora, Dryden and Sioux-Lookout are warned of a winter storm by Environment Canada with heaviest accumulation expected Friday morning.

“The good thing about this snow is that it usually doesn’t stick around for long because it has such a high moisture content,” McEwen said. “The melting is happening a little faster than the snow we see earlier in the year.”

Warmer air from the low-pressure system is expected to bring possible severe thunderstorms to southern Ontario on Friday.

It will travel across the province Friday through Saturday toward the Ottawa Valley and Montreal.
