His steady rise through Umno’s ranks over the past two decades ended with his sudden dismissal in January for “breaking party discipline”, leaving him homeless in Malaysia’s volatile political landscape.

Mr. Khairy had served in various ministries such as youth and sports; science, technology and innovation; and health, culminating in his political career as lead minister for the nationwide Covid-19 vaccination program in 2021.

Although his highest official position in Umno was youth chief – a traditional springboard to the top – the broad influence he had in the party saw him push Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi – now deputy prime minister – to the bitter end in the hard-fought presidential race of 2018. .

Since his resignation from Umno, there has been talk of running PN for Prime Minister of Negeri Sembilan or Selangor. He lost in Sungai Buloh in the general election after being shifted from Rembau where he served three terms as an MP.
