This is the situation on Saturday, April 29, 2023:

To fight

Despite the announcement of a new 72-hour ceasefire, explosions and heavy gunfire were reported in the capital Khartoum and sister city Omdurman. The sounds of air raids, anti-aircraft fire and artillery were heard. Sudan’s military chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has ruled out negotiations with Rapid Support Forces leader Mohamed “Hemedti” Hamdan Dagalo, accusing him of organizing an uprising against the state, a day after the army openness to talks. The United Nations has warned of an escalation of violence in Sudan’s West Darfur region. Fighting in the region has also involved Arab militias and ethnic Darfuri tribes. The army has accused the RSF of opening fire on a Turkish evacuation plane landing at an airport outside Khartoum.

Civilians and victims

More than 500 people have been killed and 4,200 injured since the fighting began on April 15. The ongoing fighting in the north of Khartoum has deprived residents of basic services and prevented them from escaping. More than 70 people have been killed in West Darfur’s capital, el-Geneina, the Sudanese Doctors’ Association reports. Experts warn that the Sudanese health care system is on the verge of collapse as life-saving medicines are scarce, blood banks run out and bodies lie on the streets. A hospital supported by Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres, or MSF) was ransacked in el-Geneina during a violent break-in, the group said. The UN refugee agency said the fighting has prompted tens of thousands of people to seek refuge in neighboring countries and other parts of Sudan. At least 75,000 have been internally displaced and nearly 100,000 have crossed to neighboring countries.
