Located in Turkey’s Black Sea province of Trabzon, the ancient Sumela Monastery offers its visitors nature, history and culture and has hosted approximately 600,000 visitors.
Trabzon Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism Director Tamer Erdogan said, “The monastery, which was reopened on July 1, 2021 after the restoration, hosted 597 thousand 742 visitors until June 29, 2023, although it remained closed for certain periods.” .
The Virgin Mary, also known as the Virgin Mary, is carved into the rocks in a wooded area on the slope of Karadağ Mountain in Maçka, 300 meters (984 feet) above the Altındere Valley.
The monastery, which was included in the temporary World Heritage list of UNESCO, was reopened for worship on August 15, 2010, after a decades-long hiatus, with the permission of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
The world-famous Sümela Monastery, one of Turkey’s important religious tourism centers, was closed to visitors in September 2015 due to the risk of rockfall.
Restoration of the monastery complex began in February 2016 and was completed after landscaping, geological and geotechnical surveys and strengthening of the rocks.
The ancient structure reopened on July 1, 2021, and was temporarily closed on November 1 of the same year due to the risk of rockfalls. It reopened in May last year.
