MONDAY UPDATE, with Super Mario actuals: Illumination/Nintendo/Universal’s The Super Mario Bros Movie has come in even higher with Sunday actuals now tallied, and has mushroomed to $693.1M globally through the weekend. This means it will have over $700M in its worldwide pipeline when today’s figures are added.

Why did the Bros jump from yesterday’s estimated $678M? Domestic ended up with $92.5M for the three-day, with a better Sunday than expected. Overseas, it wasn’t necessarily specific markets, but rather that across the board the weekend days were stronger than projected. In Germany, for example, Sunday was up 59% versus Saturday while the UK increased 10% on Sunday and Australia saw a 12% uplift.

Ultimately, the offshore weekend in 71 markets has come in at $102.5M versus the estimated $94.1M (see below). That represents a 22% drop from the record-breaking opening frame. The offshore cume through Sunday is $339.8M. Mario is now the No. 1 release of 2023 in 28 markets including Australia, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, Spain and UK & Ireland.

In Latin America, it is Universal’s second-biggest film ever, just behind Fast & Furious 7.

The Aaron Horvath/Michael Jelenic-directed adaptation is moving up through Sunday to become Universal’s sixth-biggest animated title of all time; passing Sing ($634.9M). With Friday’s action, it passed Despicable Me ($543.9M).

In overseas play, the Chris Pratt/Charlie Day/Anya Taylor-Joy/Seth Rogen/Jack Black-starrer is the No. 1 release of 2023 in 25 markets including Australia, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, Spain and UK & Ireland. It is also the top studio animation/family title since 2019 in four markets at current rates: Mexico, Central America, Ecuador and Venezuela.

In Mexico, Super Mario is the No. 1 movie of the year and now the third-highest-grossing animation studio ever (again, at current rates). It has overtaken The Rise of Gru and Toy Story 3.
