BANGKOK — A Thai woman accused of a spate of poisonings has been charged with 14 counts of murder, police said on Wednesday, in one of the kingdom’s worst serial killing cases.
Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn allegedly swindled thousands of dollars from her victims before poisoning them with cyanide.
She was arrested last week for nine suspicious deaths spanning several years, but police quickly expanded their investigation.
Her husband, a senior police officer, also faces charges of fraud and embezzlement in connection with the killings, Deputy Chief of National Police Surachate Hakparn said on Wednesday.
General Surachate said Sararat lured 15 people – one of whom survived – into taking poisoned “herb capsules”.
“She asked people she knows for money because she has a lot of credit card debt…
“We are investigating how much money she received from victims.”
Last week, he said the amounts involved in each case ran into the hundreds of thousands of baht – the equivalent of thousands of US dollars.
Both Sararat and her husband deny the allegations against them.
Sararat, who is four months pregnant, is facing 14 charges of first-degree murder and one of attempted murder, but police are investigating three other possibly related cases.
