Iga Swiatek and Novak Djokovic advanced to the second round of the 2023 Wimbledon Championship with consecutive victories on Monday.
The 36-year-old Serbian player started the tournament by defeating Argentine Pedro Cachin 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 after a weather delay of about 90 minutes due to heavy rain.
Djokovic later told the Center Court crowd, “The opening game is a bit of a challenge for me. I haven’t played any warmups and the turf is a bit different from the dirt.”
“Every time I come back here, I reconnect with the young boy who dreams of winning the biggest and most important tennis tournament in the world. I try not to underestimate any minute on this court.”
Seven-time Wimbledon champion Djokovic was last defeated 2182 days ago, after American player Sam Querrey eliminated him in the third round.
Norway’s Casper Ruud and Italy’s Jannik Sinner also advanced to the next round in men’s singles.

World No. 1 in women’s singles, Swiatek beat China’s Zhu Lin 6-1, 6-3 at the Wimbledon opening to advance to the second round.
2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin defeated Coco Gauff 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to become the champion.
American fourth-seeded Jessica Pegula and French fifth-seeded Caroline Garcia also advanced to the second round after defeating their opponents.
