Nayeli Rashel Gutiérrez Peraza, 18, is the intern teacher who on April 24 protected her students during the collapse of the roof of a classroom at the Juan Manuel Aguirre de Chiquimula Official Urban School for Girls No. 1, which was impacted by a structure that detached from a neighboring building.
During the emergency, Nayeli suffered serious blows to her arms, head and face, because with her body she tried to protect several of the 18 girls as young as 5 who received classes in that room.
The young teacher remained hospitalized for more than three weeks in the capital, where she was transferred by air due to the seriousness of her injuries, from which she is slowly recovering.
Dilsia Minerva Peraza Monroy, Nayeli’s mother, confirmed that the young woman was discharged from the hospital where she underwent three surgeries on her left arm.
He added that it has been a hard and painful process, since he also mourns the death of one of his daughter’s little students.
Peraza pointed out that Nayeli underwent three surgeries, but despite that, she did not recover the mobility of her left arm.
He remembers that the doctors have told him that if mobility does not return, tendon surgery will be necessary, but they hope that this is not the solution.
She also says that she hopes to see her daughter graduate this year, so in a month they expect her to return to classes, although practices at the school where the tragedy occurred were suspended.

The educational day of that Monday began normally at school. The girls and their teachers -one regular and two practitioners- sang, danced and left the room; However, the weather changed and a storm was coming, so the little ones returned to the classroom.
The teachers were getting ready to participate in a school government election event when it suddenly started to rain.
According to the practitioners, things began to get complicated when the power went out, as the room was left in darkness and the girls began to cry.
Nayeli doesn’t remember much of what happened, but she does remember that when the girls cried, she ran to the end of the room and hugged seven as best she could.
However, in a matter of seconds the panorama changed, as the room was hit by a structure made of sheets and siding that violently pierced the ceiling, hitting Nayeli and 10 of the girls, four of whom ended up in an Intensive Care Unit of a hospital.
“The power went out and I hugged seven -girls- and then the only thing I remember is that I saw that my arm was bent,” Nayeli recounted.
Nayeli is not sure how the students were evacuated, because after hearing the noise, everything was dark.
But her practice partner, Dulce Morataya, does have a clearer picture of what happened, because she came out unharmed from the mishap.
“It started to rain, it got dark and the power went out. The grade teacher was at the blackboard lighting, Nayeli was in the back and I was at the door also lighting, but some girls began to cry and in the blink of an eye the sheet fell into the classroom, ”she recalls.
She added that “I took the girls out because nothing had happened to them, then I opened the classroom door to take them out and take them to the primary school area, then I returned to take the girls out who were left with Mrs. Rocio, who is the primary school teacher. grade, and then with the support of the other practitioners we were able to get Nayeli out.”
“It was something very ugly, I felt anguish and fear when I saw unconscious and injured girls. We didn’t know what it was, we thought it was lightning”, recalls Dulce.
