Texas authorities have recovered four bodies, including a baby, from the Rio Grande near the U.S.-Mexico border since early July, officials said.
Lieutenant Chris Olivarez, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, said two of the bodies were recovered from the river on July 1, one on July 2 and one on July 3. The remains have not yet been identified.
“In the past 48 hours, the Texas Department of Public Safety Tactical Marine Unit (TMU) recovered four dead bodies, including a baby, from the Rio Grande River in Eagle Pass,” Olivarez tweeted Monday afternoon.
TMU operators and the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission responded July 1 to a request from the U.S. Border Patrol “regarding a possible drowning of an infant,” Olivarez said.

The agencies deployed two airboats and encountered “several bodies” floating down the river. Olivarez said four people were brought onto the boat, and two of them didn’t respond: a woman and a little girl.
TMU operators performed CPR on the woman and baby, but they did not respond. Once medical personnel arrived on the scene, both were taken to Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center where they were pronounced dead.
The two survivors, who were not identified, were “turned over to the US Border Patrol,” Olivarez said.

Authorities also recovered the body of an unidentified man from the Rio Grande on Sunday and then recovered the body of an unidentified woman on Monday, the Texas DPS spokesman shared.
“The identity of the deceased remains unknown as no one had any identity documents,” Olivarez added.
In addition to the bodies found in recent days, Texas DPS troopers picked up two Guatemalan migrant children left near the border on Monday.
The children, ages 8 and 11, were found on the edge of the Rio Grande in Eagle Pass, Olivarez said.

The children told troopers that an adult woman left them at the edge of the river in Mexico and told them to cross it.
“Children smuggled/trafficked across the border between Texas and Mexico continue to be exploited and left in dangerous situations,” Olivarez said Monday afternoon.
