The Argentine National Team made its presentation at the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, but was left empty-handed. He had great physical wear, he had some chances to strike, but he suffered an agonizing defeat against Italy 1-0, in his debut in group G, which he shares with Sweden and South Africa.
In their fourth participation in the World Cups, after the 2003, 2007 and 2019 editions, the women’s team -currently number 28 in the FIFA ranking- failed to make history and achieve their first World Cup victory.
Italy, 16th in the world, kept all three points thanks to a header from Cristiana Girelli, who four minutes after entering the field, at 87, converted the only goal of the match.

The best play was a stacked one that included a tunnel and raised the crowd at Eden Park stadium.

Beyond the two goals disallowed -correctly- against Italy, the Albiceleste had a good first half, with a lot of defensive intensity, the neat performance of Vanina Correa on goal and some offensive approach, in a game with few dangerous situations.

After the 2022 Copa América in July in Colombia, the selected team faced Canada (0-2) and Poland (2-2) at home in October; to Spain as a visitor (7-0 defeat); to Chile (4-0) and New Zealand (victories of 2-0 and 1-0) in February in the oceanic country; and Venezuela in Argentina (1-1 and 3-0) in April. DT Germán Portanova leaves the youthful Dalila Ippolito on the substitute bench for the debut, but bets on a 4-3-3 to go in search of making history.
The European team is ranked 16th in the FIFA ranking, but it is the second favorite in group G behind Sweden (3rd and third in the last World Cup in France 2019).
The positive data? They were eliminated in the group stage of the last Eurocup.
Constantly growing and in their first tournament since Serie A became professional, the Italians – who reached the quarterfinals four years ago after two decades of absence from the World Cups – will try to show their power from the first meeting with several Juventus figures such as captain Cristiana Girelli, Valentina Cernoia, Arianna Caruso and Barbara Bonansea.
