Corporate liquidations continued their downward trend in May. Data released yesterday from Stats SA revealed that the total number of liquidations in May fell by a further 6.2% m/m sa (Figure 1). On a year-over-year basis, total liquidations were down 19.7% year-on-year, after falling 18.8% in April.

Cumulative business liquidations through May this year were 30% lower than in the same period last year, despite the sharp deterioration in power supplies at the end of last year and this year. According to Absa research, they note that corporate liquidations are a lagging indicator and may increase in upcoming releases. But so far, the muted data on corporate liquidations indicate some corporate resilience to the ongoing challenge of electricity supply.
