Antonio “Tota” Carbajal, Mexican football legend, former goalkeeper of the “Tri” national team, passed away at the age of 93.
According to Antonio Moreno, an acquaintance of his and the director of the “Hall of Fame” of football in Mexico, he was ill for a week and after a short hospitalization he spent the last hours at home.
Carbajal was the first footballer to play in five World Cups and to appear on the field at least once in each of the editions in which he participated.
In his case, the editions he participated in were: Brazil 1950, Switzerland 1954, Sweden 1958, Chile 1962 and England 1966. His record was later equaled by Germany’s Lothar Matthaeus, Italy’s Gianluigi Buffon, multiple Ballon d’Or winners Lionel Ronaldo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as three other Mexicans: Rafa Marquez, Guillermo Ochoa and Andres Guardado.
