In Myzeqe, the pace of harvesting has decreased significantly. The closure of grain collection points and the low price has created a chaos for farmers.
Thanas Veliu, one of the farmers who cultivates large areas of wheat, says that he has stored the wheat because he cannot sell it under these conditions. Thanasi says that he did not benefit from the subsidy schemes and he tried to take the wheat to the collection points, but after the analysis, it turned out to be a weak radius.
Franc Kaloshi, one of the biggest growers in Myzeqe still has about 50 hectares unharvested, even though he should have had 25 days to finish it. For this, he blames the collection points and the policies followed which he calls failed schemes.
“I am ready to set fire to it or distribute it for charity and at this price I will not deliver it to these points”, he says.
Bajram Mehmeti has been a combine harvester for 30 years. He says that he has stopped harvesting because the price does not justify the work. He even threatens that he is willing to burn the field rather than harvest the wheat.
