The price of a kilo of local meat has now exceeded 300 LE for the first time in history in Egypt.
This has been officially announced by the Butchers Department of the Egyptian Chambers of Commerce.
The price increase came after an increase in calf prices, due to the continued increase in feed prices and the increase in demand for the month of Ramadan, Haitham Abdel Basset, deputy head of the Butchers Department at the Chamber of Commerce, said in a press statement.
The price of a kilo of local meat ranges from LE 250 to LE 320 pounds, depending on the sales area, he added.
Abdel Basset expects the newly imported Chadian meat to be offered to the government first and then pumped into the rest of the market.
He also said that the price of a kilo of local meat in government outlets is lower than on the free market.
