Police are investigating after a shoe with a severed foot inside washed up on a beach in New Zealand.
The gruesome discovery was made by a member of the public yesterday at Petone Beach, a popular bathing spot on the outskirts of the capital Wellington.
Police Sergeant Steve Williamson said police were not treating the case as a homicide, although extensive searches were being carried out in the area and surrounding waters, while submarines were also seen today.
No further revelations have yet been reported in relation to the case.
Visitors and local residents told the New Zealand press they were shocked by the discovery.
One of them said: “We bring the children here. No one knows when they will find the next leg or shoe.”
Another added: “This is very upsetting for the community. There are also elderly women here who are very worried, you don’t know what will happen next”.
The Petone Beach incident is not the only time dismembered limbs have mysteriously washed up on beaches.
Since 2007, more than 20 human feet inside sneakers have been found in various locations off the coast of the US and Canada, writes the British Metro network.
