The need for cosmetic procedures and skin care

Cosmetic procedures seem to be an innovation of modern times; although that is not exactly the case. Cosmetic surgery has been around much longer than most people think.

The earliest known instance of a cosmetic surgical procedure dates back to the 6th century BC and can be found in Sushruta-Samhita, a very important ancient Indian medical text responsible for cosmetic advancements in India and around the world.

The text is attributed to Sushruta, and his best contribution to plastic surgery is rhinoplasty, i.e. the reconstruction of the nose. The influential nature of Sushruta-Samhita, his theories of medicine, anatomical knowledge and surgical procedures are still valid today.

The primary focus of this historical review was not to highlight Sushruta’s dexterity and advanced knowledge, but to emphasize that we have been using cosmetic skin care procedures for centuries, and it would be too erroneous to believe otherwise.

This brings us to another important question, why.

What motivates people to go under the knife and opt for cosmetic procedures?

The cosmetics industry is booming. In just under a decade, it has increased fivefold. This is especially true due to the unprecedented increase in non-surgical procedures such as botox, dermal fillers, etc.

With more and more of us getting involved in slowing down our aging, it seems the idea of aging gracefully is now anathema to most.

There are 2 main reasons why someone would drop inhibition and opt for surgical treatment; either to mask an accident or illness that caused a feeling of disfigurement in the patient, or simply to improve and enhance their aesthetic appearance, which is the prevailing scenario in most cases.

It is equally important for the cosmetic dermatologist to know the reasons. Firstly, they must determine whether they are able to provide the desired service or not, and secondly, whether the chosen procedure would bring any benefit or not.

Coincidentally, some people want their nose to look like a certain celebrity, which is not always possible given the diversity and uniqueness in body shapes.

As with the second case, some patients do not necessarily need surgery. People with limited self-esteem often knock on our door. It is important for them to understand that the emptiness comes from within and that no superficial procedure would make them feel better. In severe cases, it becomes necessary to reject such patients.

The reasons you have for wanting cosmetic surgery determine whether the cosmetic dermatologist agrees to operate or not.

In the end, it all boils down to a few legitimate reasons. These include repairing bad genes, reversing the signs of aging and sun damage, repairing physical flaws, treating acne scars, and social validation. However, if you only strive for perfection, are depressed or bored and still want to opt for cosmetic surgery, keep in mind that you are not doing yourself any good.
