South Africa reported its first cholera deaths in February, after the virus spread from Malawi. It is not clear how many cases that country has recorded, but the most populous province, where the cities of Johannesburg and Pretorja are located, is the hardest hit area.
Cholera is spread mainly by food or water containing the virus and can kill within hours if left untreated, VOA reports.
The last outbreak in South Africa was between 2008 and 2009, and about 12,000 cases were reported after the virus spread from the country of Zimbabwe, which borders South Africa.
