A US first-grade teacher who was allegedly shot by a six-year-old student says she remembers how the gun went off, in her first interview since the incident.
Abigail Zwerner was shot in the hand and chest in the unexplained incident on January 6, while in her class at Richneck Elementary School, in Virginia, USA.
Zwerner says he was shot by a mentally disabled six-year-old who was supposed to be at school accompanied by his parents, while the family said he was not accompanied on the day of the incident.
Zwerner was taken to the hospital after the incident where he underwent several operations, mainly on his left hand.
She was released from the hospital last month and spoke today about the incident with the local NBC network.
“I remember him pointing the gun at me, I remember the look on his face and when the gun went off,” Zwerner said.
The teacher went on to say that she was horrified but her reaction was to pull the other children out of the classroom.
Zwerner said she didn’t know the extent of her injuries until later when she went to get medical attention.
“I remember going to my office and fainting. I thought I died”, says Zwerner, who adds that the recovery was also difficult.
“Some days were better than others as I couldn’t get out of bed, but despite what I’ve been through I try to stay positive.”
Zwerner’s attorney, Diane Toscano, said school officials had been notified that the student might have a gun on him but had not acted.
Earlier, the school said that it cannot comment on the incident due to the following investigations.
