The average surface temperature of the world’s oceans reached 21.1 degrees in early April, which is the highest on record since satellite records began.
The American National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) has published data from which it appears that the previous record from 2016, when the ocean temperature at this time of the year was 21 degrees, has been broken, reports the Guardian.
“The current trajectory of ocean temperature rise is breaking all previous records and the numbers look set to rise even further,” said University of New South Wales climatologist Professor Matthew England.
“The three-year climate phenomenon ‘La Niña’ is coming to an end,” said researcher Mike McFadden.
According to him, the “La Niña” phenomenon helped to maintain a cooler ocean temperature despite the increase in the concentration of gases in the atmosphere that cause the greenhouse effect.
