Efforts to recover the remains of the Titan submarine that suffered a catastrophic implosion near the wreckage of the Titanic are currently underway and had descended to the seafloor for a fourth dive as of Sunday.
Last Thursday, the US Coast Guard confirmed that a debris field about 500 yards from the Titanic wreckage was in fact that of the missing Titan submarine.
The submersible had five men on board when it lost contact with the surface vessel approximately one hour and 45 minutes into the descent to Titanic.
South Wellfleet, Massachusetts-based Pelagic Research Services (PRS) was approached by OceanGate, the company behind Titan, about using remotely operated vehicles, or “ROVs,” to assist in the search.

The ROV, which goes by the name of Odysseus 6K, found the “debris field” in the search area for the missing OceanGate submarine on Thursday, June 22.
Now commanded by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada and the US Coast Guard, and assisted by the US National Transportation Safety Board, PRS continues to use the ROV to recover Titan.
On Sunday, Odysseus made his fourth dive to the wreck.

“We continue to work tirelessly in our support role of this mission, along with the incredible crew of Horizon Arctic, led by Captain Adam Myers,” PRS CEO Ed Cassano said in a press release.
Since the subsequent dives of Odysseus after the initial dive to the site, the company has been able to support the investigation and recovery led by the US Coast Guard and US Navy.
Cassano said PRS has been successful in identifying objects of interest as indicated by command personnel on board.

The company also said the ROV’s ability to lift heavy objects will continue to be used in the mission.
“This recovery phase is a remarkably difficult and risky operation, especially at this depth,” said PRS spokesman Jeff Mahoney. “Considering its continuous operation under the incredible atmospheric pressure, temperatures and environmental stress, it is a testament to the team’s skill and Odysseus’ technique.
“We are very proud to have the opportunity to perform a full range of tasks as this research evolves,” he added.

Odysseus was designed by PRS and built by MPH Engineering. It was officially inaugurated in 2016.
