At least 26 people have been killed when a minibus burst into flames after a devastating collision with a truck.

Several children were reportedly on board the vehicle at the time of the accident yesterday in Mexico.

The rural heavy vehicle collided head-on with the minibus on a highway in the northwestern state of Tamaulipas before both vehicles burst into flames.

Harrowing images released by authorities showed the passenger van completely engulfed in flames.

Local media said the victims in the passenger minibus were family members who had rented the vehicle to travel to the northern city of Monterrey in Veracruz.

Authorities in Tamaulipas said the truck that hit the minibus was no longer at the scene and they did not know if the driver had fled or died in the crash.

The victims were all from Mexico as identification documents were taken from the scene.

Tamaulipas Governor Americo Villarreal Anaya said yesterday: “A painful tragedy was recorded this morning on the Guemez-Zaragoza highway where innocent people lost their lives. I have given instructions to carry out investigations into the causes of the accident and to provide assistance to all families affected by the tragedy”.
