Drug treatment programs

Drug treatment programs or drug rehabilitation refers to the process of psychotherapeutic and medical treatment of a person dependent on psychoactive substances such as hard drugs, prescription drugs or alcohol. Rehabilitation aims to enable the affected person to stop abusing the substance of interest, thus avoiding the negative effects: i.e. financial, social, psychological, physical and even legal effects.

Rehabilitation centers help addicts learn how to live in a drug-free environment. In these programs, patients are discouraged from associating with individuals who no longer wish to use addictive substances. The program aims to guide patients in exploring their habits and changing them for the better. Legal drugs such as alcohol require complete abstinence rather than moderation, which is usually unsustainable for people with a history of alcohol abuse.

Types of treatments available

Drug rehabilitation is addressed through various programs including; using local support groups, addiction treatment, medical care, residential treatment, comprehensive care providers, mental health care, recovery homes, and orthomolecular medicine. A number of rehabilitation centers have specific programs depending on the age and gender of the patient. The treatment programs not only help address the patient’s addiction problem, but also address any other issues the patients may have. Medical detoxification alone is not enough to treat addiction.

Different organizations use different styles in rehabilitating addicts, with some recommending first detoxing the patient, then medical therapy, behavioral therapy, and then relapse prevention.

Drug rehabilitation includes the following types of behavioral therapy;

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Helps patients recognize, avoid, and tolerate situations that may lead them to return to their addictive habits.
  • Multidimensional Family Therapy: is specifically designed to help addicts recover through the support of their families.
  • Motivational Interviewing: Helps motivate the patient to stop using drugs and start the treatment process.
  • Motivational Incentives: It uses positive things that are meant to encourage the patient to abstain from addictive substances.
  • Counseling: Most traditional drug addiction treatment programs are based on counseling. Counseling allows addicts to know the behaviors and problems associated with their moods. This is done on an individual or group level and may include crisis counseling and daily/weekly counseling. This counseling process helps to instill good behavior and help patients deal with any situation. Counseling results in an intervention in which professional help is sought from the parties involved to provide the patient with the necessary treatment.
  • Residential Treatment: In this rehabilitation program, you stay in the rehabilitation center while you are treated for drug addiction during the day. This treatment program usually lasts 30-90 days.
  • Sober living in a home: Like residential treatment, this treatment program involves intensive treatment while the patient is still among other recovering addicts and living in a well-supported environment. This patient treatment program is best suited in cases where the patient has nowhere to go or situations where going home means returning to the old drug problem.
  • Brief Intervention: This drug rehabilitation program is best suited for individuals who are at risk of substance abuse or the threat of drug dependence, but it is not helpful for individuals who are already addicted. Treatment through this program includes visits to a health care facility to talk about the negative effects of drug abuse and how to reduce its use.
  • Partial Hospitalization: This treatment program is best applicable to patients who require continuous medical monitoring but who have little exposure to the substance abuse problem. This treatment program is offered for 3-5 days per week and between 4-6 hours per day.

Find drug rehabilitation centers

When looking for substance abuse treatment programs in your area, it is important that you talk to your doctor for proper advice and recommendations on the right program. Health insurers can also help you find a good rehabilitation center. Local mental health clinics, hospitals, and community health centers are also good sources of information about the different drug rehabilitation programs available, depending on which treatment is best for their current addiction and budget.
