CNN, which made instant news throughout the election, drew attention to the enthusiastic celebrations that lasted until late at night in the country, and drew attention to the intense interest in Erdogan’s victory speech in the capital Ankara.

The New York Times, one of the leading newspapers in the USA, reserved a separate page on the website about the elections and gave continuous updates on the developments.

Erdogan was elected president of Turkey in the runoff election, the head of the country’s Supreme Election Board (YSK) said on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters in the capital Ankara, YSK Chairman Ahmet Yener said that Erdogan won the presidential election in the second round against Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu.

According to unofficial results, the president won the race with 52.14 percent of the vote, while Kılıçdaroğlu received 47.86 percent of the votes. So far, 99.43 percent of the ballot boxes have been opened.

The Times headline wrote, “President Erdogan Wins Re-election After Biggest Challenge Ever” and described Erdogan as “Turkey’s most important politician for 20 years”.

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) wrote in an article discussing Turkey’s foreign policy: “The nation’s longest-serving leader beat his main rival in the runoff.”

It also featured quotes from James Jeffrey, the former US Ambassador to Turkey, describing Erdogan as “calm under pressure”, and “he knows what he’s doing and presumes he’s in charge.

According to the article, Jeffrey said, “This is of interest to most voters, and especially to Turkish voters.”

The Washington Post also reported on Sunday that Erdogan had been re-elected, noting that the incumbent president had survived “the challenge of a candidate backed by a united opposition movement”.

In its headline, Politico wrote “Turkey’s Erdogan has won again” and said the president was extending his 20 years in power by promising to build “Turkey’s century”.

The newspaper said Erdogan is “in a strong position to not only influence the future direction of democracy in the 85 million-strong country, but also shape politics in the region and beyond.”
