Two US Navy destroyers shot down incoming Houthi missiles and drones that focused three US-flagged business ships escorting the destroyers within the Gulf of Aden, the US army mentioned.
There was no injury to the ships concerned, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) mentioned in an announcement. There have been no accidents, the assertion mentioned.
The destroyers, the USS Stockade and the USS O’Kane, shot down “a spread” of Houthi-launched weapons as they traveled via the gulf on Saturday and Sunday, CENTCOM mentioned.
“These actions replicate the continued dedication of CENTCOM forces to guard U.S. personnel, regional companions and worldwide transport from assaults by Iran-backed Houthis,” the command mentioned in an announcement.
The Houthis started their marketing campaign towards transport in response to Israel’s conflict in Gaza, launched after Hamas’ October 7 assault on southern Israel. Houthi leaders have vowed to proceed the assaults till Israel ends its marketing campaign in Gaza and withdraws from the world.
The US – along with Britain – first launched airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen in January 2024, after a number of months of drone and missile assaults on transport within the Purple Sea, the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea. These strikes continued into November, officers mentioned.
The Houthis launched three anti-ship ballistic missiles, three assault drones and an anti-ship cruise missile over the weekend, all of which have been defeated, the Navy mentioned.
CENTCOM, in a information launch dated Dec. 1, didn’t establish which civilian ships have been focused.
