Parliament has published the Register of Members’ Interests for 2022, revealing the declared financial, property and other interests of South Africa’s MPs over the past year.

The statements are published in terms of the Code of Ethical Behavior and Reporting Financial Interests, which states that MPs must declare their financial interests annually.

This includes directorships, partnerships, consultancies, sponsorship and financial aspects such as shares and other financial interests in companies and other legal entities, as well as paid work outside parliament.

Gifts and hospitality in excess of R1,500 must also be declared, as well as any other benefit of a material nature.

While “nothing to disclose” pops up on the register more often than not, some MPs give a lot of detail about their financial interests. One such MP is Pravin Gordhan, Minister of Public Enterprises, who detailed his various shareholdings with JSE-listed companies.

According to the minister’s statements, when the interests were registered, he held just under R4 million in shares in various groups.

The interests range from shares valued at R550 to holdings of R453,900 in Absa Bank.
