New York City police arrested a teen suspected of involvement in an assault on a white man in Queens that officers say was racially motivated.

The unnamed 35-year-old victim was attacked at around 7 p.m. on May 14 by three teenagers behind a strip mall on Main Street in the Vlissingen district, police said. The three allegedly made anti-white remarks during the attack before fleeing to the F train to escape.

The NYPD has not disclosed the suspect’s race.

The FBI released a 2021 hate crime statistics update, noting that about 10.5% of such crimes are anti-white incidents, nearly double that of anti-Hispanic incidents, and more than the 7.7% are anti-Asian incidents. That number lags far behind anti-Black or African American hate crimes, which accounted for 31.1% of hate crimes.

The latest charge is Oklahoma’s version of a hate crime. Under Oklahoma law, there is no specific statute for hate crimes, but malicious harassment or harassment also includes targeting someone based on their race.
