Marc Short, who served as chief of staff to former Vice President Mike Pence, condemned the pardons granted by former President Donald Trump in the final hours of his administration.

Short made the remarks during an appearance on “Fox News Sunday,” telling host Shannon Bream that the pardons were among the worst parts of the end of Trump’s administration.

“One of the most inappropriate parts of our administration’s end was the pardon Donald Trump gave to cocaine traffickers, to family members, to people who had committed violent crimes,” Short said.

“I think we need to have a real conversation about what people would actually do with the power of grace,” he continued. “There are a few people on stage who have been governors and understand it, but I think even when you look at Donald Trump’s track record when it comes to pardon, it was indefensible.”

Trump granted 73 pardons and 70 reduced sentences on January 20, 2021, his last day in office. Pardon recipients included former White House adviser Steve Bannon and rappers Lil Wayne and Kodak Black.

Short’s comments came on the same day that Pence was defending former President Donald Trump’s right to have his day in court, but evaded questions about whether Trump should be convicted if allegations against him prove true.

Pence appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday for a lengthy interview with host Chuck Todd. Todd started the conversation by mentioning Trump’s indictment and subsequent appearance at a federal courthouse in Miami, but Pence repeatedly dodged the host’s questions.
