Are you planning a road trip to Florida this summer? If so, it can be difficult to maneuver through the state, especially if you get pulled over by the police.
A law enacted July 1 by Governor Ron DeSantis invalidated certain driver’s licenses and learning permits from five states in Florida. The restriction mainly affects undocumented immigrants and is part of a broader immigration law which critics say is one of the hardest in the country.
The law also cracks down on undocumented immigration by making it illegal to bring an undocumented person into the state and penalizing anyone who uses false documents to find employment.
If someone shows one of the invalid driver’s licenses when pulled over, they can get a ticket for driving without a valid driver’s license. Residents of the five states that do not have disclaimers on their licenses will not be allowed citations if they are apprehended.
The five now invalid licenses and learner permits are from:
Connecticut and contain “Not for Federal Identification”
Delaware and contain “Right to drive only” or “Not valid for identification”
Hawaii and include “Limited Use Driver’s License”, “Provisional Limited Use Driver’s License”, or “Not Valid for Use for Official Federal Purposes”
Rhodes Island and contain “Not for Federal Identification”, “Driver Privilege Card” or “Driver Privilege Permit”
Vermont and add “Not for REAL ID Purposes Driver’s Privilege Card”.
