The boy who shot is 15 years old and was left under the protection of his parents. The victim, 23, died instantly.
A day of hunting and fishing in the rural area of Esquina, Corrientes, ended in tragedy: a 23-year-old young man died after being shot accidentally from a rifle carried by his 15-year-old brother.
The event occurred on Sunday at dusk in the area known as El Malezal, in the fourth section of Paraje Malvinas, where the Police found the victim without vital signs due to a bullet wound to the head.
It was the victim’s father who called the Esquina police station to request an ambulance for his son.
A patrol car was able to reach the inhospitable area, which is almost 90 kilometers from the city, with the help of a senior non-commissioned officer of the Corrientes Police who is in charge of a detachment.
The vehicle even had to ford a water course to approach the place. And he transferred the nurses, since the ambulance could not enter due to the conditions of the land, according to reports.
The staff at the Esquina hospital verified that Alberto Alcides Benítez, 23, no longer had vital signs and that the bullet entered through the left temporal area, without an exit wound.
Manuel Benítez, the father of the brothers involved in the tragic event, told the police that his 15-year-old son ran back to the house and told him that a shot from a 22-caliber rifle had escaped when he was returning with his brother from a day of hunting and fishing.
The teenager said that it was Alberto who gave him the carbine to take with him on the way back. The minor was walking ahead, with the gun on his shoulder, when he stumbled and fell to the ground, after which the shot was fired.
According to what he said, when he turned around to see where the projectile had hit, he ran into his brother lying on the ground, his head bathed in blood and unconscious.
The Esquina prosecutor, Javier Mosquera, was at the scene of the incident and ordered the seizure of the weapon and the transfer of the minor and his father to the Esquina police station, so that they can give a statement.
The victim’s body, meanwhile, was taken to the Judicial Morgue in the city of Corrientes, where an autopsy was to be carried out this Tuesday, which, among other things, will seek to determine the trajectory of the shot.
Mosquera preventively labeled the case as “simple homicide”, but because it was a minor, he ordered that he be left in the care of his parents until the investigation could move forward.
