Former President Trump appeared to be settling a conflict with the main US pro-life group after the two met Monday ahead of the 2024 Republican primary.

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, said she had a “great meeting” with Trump along with Senator Lindsey Graham, RS.C. The meeting came weeks after Dannenfelser denounced the Trump campaign’s claim that abortion restrictions should be left exclusively to states as a “morally indefensible position”.

In a statement released after the rally, Dannenfelser indicated that Trump offered some support for a federal law on abortion. Specifically, she said Trump had made it clear to her that “any federal legislation protecting these children should include the exceptions for mother’s life and in cases of rape and incest.”

Those exceptions aside, she said Trump was speaking out against the much more permissive abortion rules that Democrats are pushing for.

“During the rally, President Trump reiterated his opposition to the extreme Democratic position of abortion on demand, paid for by the taxpayer up to the time of birth — and in some cases even after the child is born,” Dannenfelser said. “President Trump believes such a position is unworthy of a great nation and believes the American people will rebel against such a radical position that aligns us with China and North Korea.”

The statement does not mention which exact federal abortion restrictions were discussed. Graham introduced a bill that would allow abortion nationwide during the first 15 weeks of pregnancy, which he and pro-life allies noted is a common point of restriction in Europe. His bill included exceptions for rape, incest and maternal health risks.

The Trump campaign in April suggested the former president would not push for abortion restrictions at the federal level if he recaptured the White House.

“President Donald J. Trump believes the Supreme Court, led by the three justices he supported, was right in ruling that this is a matter to be decided at the state level,” the campaign told The Washington Post.

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, said she had a “great meeting” with Trump along with Senator Lindsey Graham.

This prompted a statement from Dannenfelser, who made it clear that her organization will not support a presidential candidate unless they support a federal law that only allows abortions during the first 15 weeks.

“President Trump’s claim that the Supreme Court has remanded the issue of abortion solely to the states is a wholly misreading of the Dobbs decision and is a morally indefensible position for a self-declared pro-life presidential candidate,” Dannenfelser said. “Life is a matter of human rights, not the rights of states.”

Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America was a major backer of Trump in 2016 and 2020. Dannenfelser served as national chair of the Trump Pro-life Coalition in the 2016 campaign.

Pro-Life America last month met with 2024 Republican presidential nominee Nikki Haley, who called for a national consensus on abortion restrictions.
