A distinguished Tunisian opposition activist has been given a one-year suspended jail sentence for insulting the president, her lawyer says.
Chaima Issa was convicted by a navy courtroom on Wednesday of inciting troopers to disobey orders and insulting President Kais Saied, Islem Hamza stated. Issa denies wrongdoing.
The fees relate to feedback Issa made accusing Saied of attempting to create “tyranny,” saying parliamentary elections in 2022 had been ineffective and calling on the navy to not be concerned.
Issa’s sentence is broadly seen by the Tunisian opposition as a step to silence Saied’s critics.
The president, who was democratically elected in October 2019, launched an influence seize in July 2021, deposing the previous parliament and prime minister and giving himself sweeping emergency powers. He has since pushed via a brand new structure to weaken parliament and crack down on his political opponents.
Issa himself was one in all twenty political leaders arrested in February on suspicion of “conspiracy in opposition to state safety”. She was launched in July pending trial.

Saied has rejected such calls, describing the prisoners as “terrorists” and “traitors” and warning that judges who launch them would encourage their crimes.

Samir Dilou, a senior official with the Nationwide Salvation Entrance and a lawyer for Issa, stated: “The navy courtroom doesn’t have the authority to strive opponents. Opinion processes should finish.”
