The Indian army confirms casualties in the Rajouri sector of the Himalayan region of the disputed territory.
Two Indian soldiers have been killed and four wounded in what the army says was an operation against armed groups in Kashmir.
Indian forces have launched several operations in the Rajouri sector of the Himalayan region after unidentified gunmen opened fire on an Indian army vehicle last month, killing at least five soldiers.
In a statement, the military said a search team on Friday encountered a group of fighters trapped in an area “thickly overgrown with rocky and steep cliffs.”
“The terrorists activated an explosive device in retaliation,” the statement said, adding that the operation was ongoing.
“The army team suffered two fatalities with injuries to four more soldiers, including an officer.”
Kashmir, claimed entirely by India and Pakistan but partly ruled by the two neighboring countries, has been the scene of a bloody armed uprising against New Delhi since the 1990s.
New Delhi has struggled for decades to dampen secession in what was once the only Muslim-majority state.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reasserted control of New Delhi in August 2019 and abolished Article 370 of the constitution, ended the region’s autonomy and removed statehood by dividing Indian-administered Kashmir into the two federal territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
