The Ukrainian military said Russian troops blew up a major dam in southern Ukraine, while the Moscow-installed official in the town of Nova Kakhovka in the Russian-controlled part of the Kherson region denied the claim.

“The Kakhovka (reservoir) has been blown up by the Russian occupier,” the southern command of the Ukrainian armed forces said on its Facebook page on Tuesday.

“The extent of the devastation, the speed and amount of water and likely areas of flooding are being clarified,” the army said.

The Reuters news agency could not immediately verify the Ukrainian statement.

Earlier, a Russian state news agency quoted the Moscow-installed mayor of Nova Kakhovka as denying the reports.

“Everything is quiet and calm, there is nothing at all,” Russian agency TASS quoted Vladimir Leontiev as saying.
