UN warns of ‘alarming experiences’ of escalation in North Darfur

The UN on Friday issued a stark warning on the escalating state of affairs in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur in Sudan, saying the realm is “already on the point of famine.”

“We’re receiving more and more alarming experiences of a dramatic escalation of tensions between armed actors in El Fasher, North Darfur,” UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated in a press release.

Dujarric stated the paramilitary “Fast Help Forces (RSF) are reportedly encircling El Fasher, suggesting a coordinated transfer to assault town could also be imminent,” including that the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) are positioning themselves, elevating issues of a large-scale confrontation.


Noting that such an assault on town would trigger “devastating penalties for the civilian inhabitants,” the UN spokesperson additionally reminded that “this escalation of tensions is in an space already on the point of famine.”
