The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has welcomed a $40 million contribution from the United States of America, which will provide critical assistance to some 790,000 people, as well as the provision of humanitarian air services in troubled northern Mozambique.
The contribution, made through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), comes at a critical time as some 3.15 million people in the country face high levels of food insecurity, according to the latest Integrated Phase Classification (IPC). The funding will help WFP provide essential food and nutrition assistance to conflict and disaster-affected people and some refugees from the Great Lakes region of Cabo Delgado, Nampula and Niassa provinces, and to operate flights on behalf of the humanitarian community .
“We are grateful to the people of the United States for extending a helping hand to the people of Mozambique,” said Antonella D’Aprile, WFP’s Country Director in Mozambique. “The aid not only helps the most vulnerable people meet their immediate needs, but also contributes to strengthening much-needed resilience, promoting peace and strengthening stability within communities.”
The donation from the United States will also enable WFP to continue to provide air and logistics services to all humanitarian partners operating in Mozambique. The United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS), operated by the WFP, is critical for transporting humanitarian personnel and essential cargo to non-commercially viable destinations in northern Mozambique.
“With this important contribution to the World Food Program, the United States is working together to improve food security in Mozambique,” said Peter Vrooman, United States Ambassador to Mozambique. “Food aid for people displaced by conflict not only provides food for their bodies, but also a lifeline for their resilience and recovery.”
The United States is the largest donor to WFP’s activities in Mozambique, contributing $289.1 million since 2017.
