In the construction of better societies, governments and legislatures always play a basic role, as depositaries of the popular will, a responsibility that sometimes remains hostage to conflicts of interest, unbridled ambitions, and paralegal subterfuges that erect labyrinths in which they lose the ideals of development, the competitive potential and even the self-esteem of the citizens.

But that is where a leading role comes in: the role of private initiative as the main generator of wealth in nations, manager of productivity and promoter of job opportunities for millions of inhabitants. Those who do not work for a private company, it is because they have decided to found a venture, perhaps personal, perhaps with three, four or 10 employees, but the paradigm is the same: the vision of growth.

It is at this point where many politicians and officials lose the notion of responsibility, stop fulfilling the task of promoting competitiveness, removing bureaucratic obstacles and neglecting the fundamental exercise of providing legal certainty. The latter is especially relevant, because it encompasses the guarantee of transparent authorization, acquisition and operation processes, as well as reducing any loophole of corruption in compliance with procedures and internal operating standards. When certain authorities lose the ethical map and play the game around legality, they not only damage the institutional framework, but also competitiveness.

So, two huge forces come into play. One is external, the international regulations, in terms of treaties, declarations, agreements and norms signed by the countries. The other is internal, the unification of convictions of the private initiative in terms of probity, healthy practices, the demand for respect for fundamental rights and commitment to excellence to provide quality goods and services in a national, regional and global competitive environment.

That is why it is so laudable and worthy of following the example set by 10 leading companies, belonging to the Alliance for Central America to stop forced migration, to proactively sign a declaration of total respect, adherence and defense of the rule of law in the Northern Triangle. , which implies a total commitment to sound business practices, the generation of opportunities and the defense of freedoms.

These visionary companies are, in alphabetical order: AgroAmerica, Grupo Mariposa, Corporación AG, Mastercard, Microsoft, Millicom, Pantaleon, Parkdale Mills, PepsiCo and PriceSmart, whose operating standards were already high, but are now rising even higher, in search of to contribute more to the societies where they work.

They are not simple processes. On the contrary, they require investment in transformation, homologation of procedures and constant monitoring of such account. However, it is a virtuous practice, because it generates new efficiencies, enriches the protocols of all its collaborators and, above all, contributes concrete actions in the construction of competitive democracies.
