Large protests broke out in New Caledonia this week after the French parliament voted to permit French residents who’ve lived within the Pacific islands’ territory for ten years or extra to vote in provincial elections.
The French authorities has argued that these reforms protect democracy within the archipelago. However locals – particularly these from the indigenous Kanak neighborhood, which makes up 40 % of the island’s inhabitants – worry it will undermine their efforts to achieve independence from France.
