Virginia has euthanized 40,000 trout after current testing detected whirling illness amongst catchable-sized fish, officers stated.

The Virginia Division of Wildlife Sources (DWR) stated the commonwealth made the choice to euthanize the 40,000 catchable trout on the Marion Fish Hatchery to stop the illness from spreading.

“DWR’s stringent fish-health protocols contain common testing at state hatcheries to search for pathogens which can be doubtlessly dangerous to hatchery raised and wild fish. DWR doesn’t inventory identified whirling illness optimistic fish,” the DWR stated in a press launch.

“Regrettably, DWR has needed to euthanize 40,000 catchable trout to manage whirling illness. This represents a couple of 20% discount in regular stocking ranges for Southwest Virginia and a 5% discount statewide. Consequently, trout anglers are prone to see a discount in trout stocking, notably in Dickenson, Buchanan, Sensible, Lee, Scott, Russell, Washington, Smyth, Tazewell, and Grayson Counties.”
