Why your travel insurance claims may be rejected

Traveling is a good experience that a person can have in his life. Most travelers choose to purchase travel insurance to be “safe and secure” when things don’t go according to plan or something unexpected happens. Before purchasing travel insurance, it is crucial that customers first understand what the insurance will and will not cover. It is not guaranteed that you will inevitably be covered if something goes wrong. A misinterpretation of an insurance policy can lead to disappointment when your travel insurance claim is rejected when you need it most.

What if your travel insurance application is rejected when you need it most? The following are the most common reasons why your claim may be rejected:

Undeclared pre-existing conditions

When purchasing travel insurance, please indicate if you have a pre-existing medical condition. Some insurers cover medical conditions at an additional cost, others do not. Failure to disclose this information may result in your attempt to file a travel insurance claim being denied when your medical records are accessed. Check and comply with all provider rules. Remember that this specific insurance coverage is for unexpected injury and illness only.

Incomplete forms and documentation

Another reason why your travel insurance claim may be rejected is simply that an incomplete form, important information is missing or has been filled in incorrectly. Always make sure that your form is completed correctly and completely. All necessary attachments are included before sending your claims, such as doctor’s statement, police report (for theft or loss of items), proof of purchase for your valuables or even confirmation of the carrier’s delay.

Participate in adventurous or dangerous activities

Travel insurance policies have different coverages in terms of sports activities and adventure they cover. Usually they do not cover extreme sports that are considered dangerous, but there may be an additional premium available for activities such as parasailing, jumping, hiking at altitude, etc. Check the activities your provider covers before signing up for a particular vacation activity.

Unapproved destinations (against WHO or FCO advice)

Some insurers only provide coverage for specific destinations and usually do not cover locations that the Foreign and Commission Office or the Whole Health Organization have advised against travel.

Alcohol intoxication or drug use

If you have lost valuables, damaged a personal item or had an accident while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, your travel insurance claim will likely be considered invalid. Although you travel to enjoy your life, be responsible and keep everything in moderation.

Illegal/reckless conduct

Fraudulent, dishonest and unlawful conduct, such as visiting restricted locations and unauthorized use of facilities, is not covered by any insurance. Always comply with all rules and regulations to avoid problems during your trip.

Baggage unattended

Please note that unattended items are not covered unless they are in a locked hotel safe or secure trunk. When claiming a lost item, always ask for a police report on the incident or ask the hotel or tour operator for a written statement – this will help with your travel insurance claim.

Events that take place before the travel insurance is taken out

Events that have already taken place before you took out insurance are apparently not covered. If you claim it, it will be rejected and may even be considered fraudulent.

As much as possible, we want everything to go as planned: before, during and after our trip. But there really are some instances where something would go wrong and stress-free and uncomplicated claim processing can alleviate the situation.
