STORY: According to local police, a semi-trailer hit a small bus carrying a group of mostly elderly people.
The accident is one of the deadliest traffic accidents in recent Canadian history. Separately, the Winnipeg Free Press newspaper said the victims were heading to a local casino.
Caroline Bleackly, who watched the events unfold after the incident, said several fire engines rushed to the scene while some bystanders were seen trying to help the injured.
The crash occurred at the intersection of two major roads near the town of Carberry in southwestern Manitoba, 170 km (105 mi) west of Winnipeg. According to police, the drivers of both vehicles were still alive. They would not say who might be responsible for the crash.
